How to Overcome Loneliness

Do you...

  • Ever feel lonely or know friends or family who feel isolated?
  • Sometimes or often experience feeling isolated, unloved and unsupported?
  • Often feel no-one cares about you, or thinks about you?
  • Experience sadness because you don't have family or friends in your life?
  • Find it difficult to pick up the phone to ask for support or ask to spend fun time with friends or family?
  • Feel a deep, deep sadness and aloneness inside your heart which just never seems to go away?

You are not 'alone'. Loneliness is a huge issue for many people... and it sucks. It's one of the worst feelings ever. And I know from personal experience...

I experienced many years of feeling alone, unsupported and unloved. I discovered this started in childhood, and then continued into adulthood. The good news is I have learned how to recognize loneliness and what to do about it. And you can too.

According to research, loneliness and isolation...

  • Increase the likelihood of mortality by 26%
  • Are associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke (Valtorta et al, 2016)
  • Are harmful to health: lacking social connections carries the same risk factor for early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day
  • Two fifths all older people (about 3.9 million) say the television is their main company (Age UK, 2014)
  • 59% of adults aged over 52 who report poor health say they feel lonely some of the time or often, compared to 21% who say they are in excellent health (Beaumont, 2013)
  • 17% of older people are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week and 11% are in contact less than once a month (Victor et al, 2003)

Signs of loneliness also include depression, fatigue, listlessness, disinterest in fun or hobbies and more.

THE GOOD NEWS IS WE CAN LEARN HOW TO REVERSE LONELINESS FROM THE INSIDE OUT.

Apart from the obvious mental and emotional benefits of reducing feelings of loneliness, there are many physical reasons for reducing loneliness too. Feeling connected boosts our immune system, improves health and literally makes us 'feel alive' and in a life 'worth living'.

What people say about this program

"Thank you so much for all the helpful content. I am sleeping better now and managing to enjoy my days more because I feel I can choose what to do to make me feel better. I can understand that the loneliness and disconnection is to do with losing a sense of who I am, but I am even getting pleasure out of little things I like doing, that I would have talked myself out of doing, by rationizing that I should be doing something else first. When I think I have to ring someone, it's usually because I need something for myself". SB, New Zealand
